Pierre Rolls to First Win at Magic Valley Speedway

It may have been a bit on the cool side Saturday night, but it didn’t take long for Johnny Pierre to heat things up at Magic Valley Speedway.

Early on, the American Speed Association Intermountain Pro Truck driver was the top qualifier of the night after posting a time of 16.186 seconds to the top of the scoreboard. Later he would finish second behind Doug Dugger in the heat race.

For the main, Pierre lined up at the rear of the field of 12 competitors. Just after lap four was completed, the No. 77 truck driven by Travis Monett got loose while fighting for the lead with Drew Reitsma. After the dust settled, Monett and Alan Larson had serious damage to their rides and would spend the rest of the evening in the pits.

Scott Luttmer, 2012 champion in the series, suffered damage to the No. 9 truck but was able to continue in the 50-lap event.

Jerry Rice was the race leader for the next dozen laps but when Reitsma and Jesse Anderson got together in turn four, Rice was also involved and would have to give up the lead to change a flattened right rear tire.

Pierre, who had the good fortune to only be a spectator of all the mayhem, soon took over the front-runner position for the remainder of the event.

Hannah Newhouse ran second until a rebounding Scott Luttmer took over the position with 12 laps to go.

“I saw Scott creeping up on me so I picked it up a little bit towards the end,” Pierre later said. The decisive win was Pierre’s first at his hometown track. “It was ugly out there at first and I was close to every one of those wrecks, but I was able to avoid them all. It ended up being a really good day for us; we’ll remember this one for awhile.”

Rice summed up his fourth place finish as “disappointing.”  “After we put the tire on we had the wrong stagger. Up until then we were good. But, you can’t win them all.”

In NASCAR Whelen Weekly Racing Series action, it was a good night for much of the Pehrson clan.

Dan Pehrson took over the lead at lap three of the Super Stocks main to eventually take the win, crossing the finish line just ahead of runner-up Norm Hatke.

Several cautions marred the competition. The No. 23 car of Daniel Shirley had to exit to the pits at lap three but Shirley drove his way back up to second late in the race. A restart with two laps remaining in the 30-lap event saw Shirley get loose on the front stretch, resulting in a fifth place finish for the night.

Pehrson’s son, Casey Pehrson, had a somewhat rough start of the season, finishing six in the field of seven starters in the event.

For Dan Pehrson’s other son, Mitchell Pehrson, the outcome was much more favorable.

Driving the No. 18 car in the Street Stocks division, Mitchell Pehrson held the lead from the drop of the green flag. Pehrson’s toughest competition came from Joshua Hunt, who pursued him for much of the 30-lap main, but Hunt could not find his way around the leader.

Jay McDonald spun out at lap 26, striking the infield wall, setting up the only caution of the event.

In other action, Eddy Cole took the lead from Brandon Greco at lap 11 to capture the first Hornets main event race of the season and Jr. Stingers driver Hailey Douglas wrangled the front position away from Justice Coates for the win in their 20-lap main.

The White Lighting car was the winner of the Thunderdogs fight.
