Dalton Edges Edens Sr For Super Stock Season Opening Win

April 21, 2018

By Nate Graves:

Magic Valley Speedway’s feature division teams unloaded for the first time of the 2018 season on Saturday night as Middlekauff Auto mall presented the racing fans with another glorious night at the races.

The division one, Magic Valley Pipe Super Stocks, laid on the loud pedal in their first 35 lap main event of the year. And although the winds were as calm and the temperature was perfect, the energy on the track was as furious as the speeds were frenetic.

Saturday night’s Super Stock race will ultimately go down as the first chapter in a season long battle to be named as the top driver at Idaho’s fastest NASCAR track.  Steve Eden’s Sr; last year’s runner up, the night began with an impressive show of strength as the driver of the #23 dominated the competition in qualifying, and then went on to win the heat.

Unfortunately, for the #23, Willie “The Outlaw” Dalton, had other plans. Dalton, who struggled earlier in practice, ultimately found the speed he needed to contend with Edens in the main. After a lengthy battle, almost ending in disaster on multiple occasions, Edens conceded the lead to Dalton, nearly hitting the wall on the exit of turn 2. Edens said after the race that his right-rear tire overheated, causing him to lose the last little bit of grip he would have needed to hold off Dalton.

Saturday’s event also featured a 75-lap season opener for the Royal Purple Modified touring series. Zach Webster in the #29 got out and up front early in this one after completing a pass for the lead on lap 5. But after a series of three (3) separate caution flags in only 15 laps, Webster was unable to separate himself from the rest of the field and was eventually ran down and passed by the #66 Erik Rhead.

With Rhead out front and checking out on the field, the #44 of Al Jones went to work on Webster in a battle for the 2nd spot. After 7 laps of a hard-fought wheel to wheel battle, Jones eventually took sole possession of P2. Webster said after the race that he was happy with a 3rd place finish given the fact that he drove over half of the race without power steering.

At the track for Middlekauff Auto mall night of racing at the Magic Valley Speedway was the Lion Tamer Beard Care Division 4, Mini Stocks. Making the tow from Salt Lake City Utah, Courtney Green in the #8 outlasted the rest of the competition to take home the hardware in both of the double mains, they ran.

In other local series action, the 2017 Quale’s Electronics Jr. Stinger division, 1st half champion, Kaili McKean driving the #19, fired off from the front row of a 15-lap main with a “take no prisoners” attitude. McKean started off from the front row and immediately took to the green flag with a get-up-and-go mentality as she was able to hold off last week’s main event winner Zach Rydalch in the #24, to claim her first win of the 2018 season.

In the Project Filter Street Stock main event, Candy Fredrickson in her pink #88 got out front early but then lost the lead, after a near spin off of turn 4, slowed her momentum and gave the race lead to the #3 Danny Gilliam. Gilliam was able to drive off and get the win by holding off Craig McCann in the #24 GM powered Street Stock.

The #18 driven by Jerry Fredrickson stayed consistent with his second straight top 3 finish.
Although McCann finished in the runner-up spot in the Street Stocks for the second week in a row, his night ended on a high note as he was able to take home the win in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Thunder dogs main event.

Don’t forget to check us out next Saturday night as Whelen Engineering presents the Magic Valley Pipe Super Stocks, featuring the Budweiser Modifieds, Shari’s Café Hornets, Quale’s Electronic Jr. Stingers, La Fiesta Minivans, Extreme Staffing Double Deckers, and the first race of the 2018 season for the Pro Truck Series. Gates open at 5, McDonald’s qualifying is at 5:30 with the green flag flying at 6.   We’ll see you at the races!
