Lawson Locks Up First Triple Crown Feature

The grandstands at Magic Valley Speedway were full Saturday, August 3, as the third-mile asphalt oval hosted Pacific Steel and Recycling Lucky Rides Night. The McDonald’s Street Stocks welcomed the first round of the Apex Idaho Short Track Triple Crown on Saturday night, while the Western Mountain Inc. NASCAR Latemodels, Speed Tour Modifieds powered by Pit Stop USA, Domino’s Legends, Project Filter Mini Modifieds, Quale’s Electronics Stingers, and Budweiser Bombers ran their own features in pursuit of the night’s DataTel feature flags.

Thirteen McDonald’s Street Stocks took the green flag for the first round of the Apex Idaho Short Track Triple Crown. On the break Ronn McClimans bolted to the lead in his Advantage Archery machine with Mitch Pehrson and T. Roy in tow.

On the move early was tenth-place starter Jesse James Lawson, who used the outside line and a daring three-wide pass to reach the top five in just two laps. After a handful more Lawson had his Antlers Boutique machine in the runner up spot and was gaining on leader McClimans until an early caution flag waved.

On the restart Lawson dispatched McClimans to second place. Pat Tully, Josh Fanopoulos, and Kyle Latham also stormed by McClimans and set their sights on Lawson. But Lawson proved too strong, and he cruised to the opening Apex Idaho Short Track Triple Crown feature win. Roy dodged a late-race jam up to finish second, with Tully third, Latham fourth, and McClimans fifth.

Colin Anderson outran Western Mountain Inc. NASCAR Latemodel points leader Andrew Palmer to take the Pacific Steel and Recycling Lucky Rides Night feature win in his JH Hillock Electric entry. Doyal Moen brought his Fast Lane Automotive machine home third ahead of Shawn Lester and fifth place Mille Hadnham.

In the Speed Tour Modifieds powered by Pit Stop USA ranks Johnathon Gomez may have arrived late to the race track, but he was first to cross the finish line Saturday. Gomez wheeled his Western Mountain, Inc., Desert Dog Renewables mount to the front early while division points leader Donovan Barr searched for a way to move his machine to the point, but eventually settled into second place ahead of Chris Cook and his Major League Auto Repair modified.

Austin Murphy continued his hot streak in the Domino’s Legends division as he racked up a sixth feature win of the season at the controls of his Phoenix Fire Games, Bryant Ideas racer. Andrew Tuttle finished second with Payton Weller, Tim Neumeyer, and Joe Daily rounding out the top five.

Amanda Burlingame tallied another Project Filter Mini Modified feature victory in her Rebel Trophies, Mark Shockley Law Office entry.

Forward, backward, big track, little track, no matter what was thrown at the Budweiser Bombers, Brayden Sweatfield was ready, and he claimed the DataTel feature flag. Tyla Adams, despite being a lap down, was challenged to back her minivan across the line ahead of Sweatfield. Adams found just enough control to beat Sweatfield to the line and claim a cash prize.

Tiffany Moen had the Quale’s Electronics Stinger feature well in hand until a collision on the white flag lap disabled her Fast Lane Automotive, The Beach Tanning Company car. This left Kaethyn Gilligan and his Willow Realty Group, Guppies Hot Rod Grille machine to cross the finish line and collect the DataTel feature flag.

Three rounds of kids packed their way into fifteen racecars plus the all-new Twin Falls Chevrolet pace car, two push trucks, and a tow truck as they lapped the third-mile as part of the Pacific Steel and Recycling Lucky Ride Night.

Buckle up for this Saturday night at Magic Valley Speedway! Eve of Destruction II presented by Quale’s Electronics roars to life with a World Famous Boat Race of Destruction, The Beast Jet Car Meltdown, Hornets versus the Gauntlet, Fireworks, and more! Plus, the Western Mountain Inc. NASCAR Latemodels, Pepsi Sprintcars, McDonald’s Street Stocks, Pepsi Mini Stocks, Budweiser Bombers, and Magic Valley Speedway Hornets do battle on the third-mile for crucial late season points. General admission to a full night of wreckin’ and racin’ is just $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and military members, $8 for kids 7-11, and free for kids 6 and under. Gates open at 4:45 p.m. Saturday with the green flag at 6:30 p.m. Log on to www.magicvalleyspeedway.com to purchase your advance tickets now while they last. We’ll see you Saturday, August 17, for Eve of Destruction II presented by Quale’s Electronics at Idaho’s fastest NASCAR Home Track, Magic Valley Speedway.
