Dillon, King Duel for Eve of Destruction 150 Victory
Smashes, crashes, and explosions rocked Magic Valley Speedway on Saturday, September 6, as the third-mile hosted Eve of Destruction III. The Western Mountain Inc. NASCAR Latemodels and McDonald’s Street Stocks battled for both the night’s YMC Mechanical trophies and some extra cash, while the Project Filter Mini Modifieds crowned a champion, and the Fast Lane Automotive Hornets and Budweiser Thunderdogs scrapped to collect every late season point they could.
Ten Western Mountain Inc. NASCAR Latemodels had 71 laps to find a Eve of Destruction III feature winner. Stacy Borgeman made the most of his front row starting spot to take the early lead in his PT Trucking, G-Zero CNC Machining car.
But behind Borgeman Wyatt King and Johvan Dillon found the handle on their mounts and tore through the field to put themselves first and second on the McDonald’s scoreboard. King’s Major Tire and Hitch mount was strong, but Dillon’s Dillon Toyota Lift machine was stronger, and he proved it by reeling in the leader bit by bit over the race’s first half.
Lapped traffic had kept Dillon pinned behind King, and as soon as the lead duo hit open racetrack the lead fight commenced in earnest. Dillon’s car was hooked to the low line while King worked half a groove up. Dillon forced his way to the inside and pulled even with King once, but again lapped traffic stymied his run. Laps later Dillon would avoid disaster as another lapped car spun in front of the youngster. The resulting yellow flag bunched the field and allowed Dillon to pull even with King for the restart.
The green flag waved and both King and Dillon basted into turn one. King dug hard on the inside, but the momentum from the high groove propelled Dillon into the lead. With Dillon firmly out front the battle on track became the third-place skirmish between Shawn Lester and Daniel Johnson. Johnson worked Lester over from the inside groove for a handful of laps before he moved his Chelsea Johnson at Team Realty, Dillon Toyota Lift racer into the spot.
After a pair of quick caution flags King was ready to give Dillon his last best shot. Again on the inside King slung his car beside Dillon, but broke traction and slid sideways out of turn two. King gathered his machine and continued but could only watch as Dillon marched to the checkers. Johnson brought his machine home third ahead of Lester and Doyal Moen.
The Project Filter Mini Modifieds settled their season with a fierce fifteen lap fight. Mike Gill, Jr rocketed into the early lead while point leader Eddie Griffith kept pace on the outside. After a dozen frantic laps Griffith wrestled his Mr. Mudd, Riverside Embroidery car even with GIll, Jr, then burst into the lead on the back stretch. This move would solidify not only Griffith’s feature win, but his division title as well.
The McDonald’s Street Stocks contested a 35 lap feature in search of both the night’s YMC Mechancial trophy and a $500 payday. Austin Savery moved into the early lead but was forced to relinquish the top spot to Ronn McClimans after a handful of laps.
McClimans wheeled his Advantage Archery, Monterey Jack’s machine hard to keep up front, but could do little to fend off Josh Fanopoulos’ machine. Once Fanopoulos bolted around McClimans he settled in and cruised to the victory. McClimans held on for second place ahead of Mitch Pehrson, Zaine Newberry, and Jake Altman.
Thirteen Fast Lane Automotive Hornets took the green flag for their 25 lap feature. After a hard-fought feature the checkered flag waved over division dominator and new track record holder Dusty Sterner.
When the smoke cleared from a wild Budweiser Thunderdog feature Casper the Friendly Ghost materialized in the winner’s circle as did its pilot Cody Carsner.
Tyler Cummings won the night’s Apex Idaho Drift Challenge event over Ryan Day. Cru Fleischer took home third place event honors, but those were overshadowed by his overall Apex Idaho season championship.
Ronn McClimans managed his tire best and won the Les Schwab Tires Tire Race. A man named Brody motored around the 1/5th mile little track to win the Lawnmower Exhibition
Long-time Mr. Dizzy assistant Cowgirl hopped aboard the bright yellow ‘ZOOM’ machine and plowed through the Steel Wall.
Not to be outdone Mr. Dizzy himself launched a Lincoln Town Car through a stack of four scrap vehicles. Later, Mr. Dizzy climbed into a Subaru and set it alight. He then exited the inferno a bit warm, but otherwise unscathed. The Subaru, on the other hand, may still be smoldering despite the fire crew’s best efforts.
The Gauntlet plowed his way across the finish line to defeat The Swarm.
The World-Famous Boat and Trailer Races of Destruction closed out Eve of Destruction III with a hard-hitting affair. Jeff Peck may have been forced to retire the legendary Woodpecker boat race rig, but his new vehicle, lovingly referred to as the Redneck was up to the task and he stormed to the Boat Race of Destruction victory over Sister Smash-A-Lot.
