Magic Valley Speedway
Webster, Barr Spar in Speed Tour Showdown
The Speed Tour Modifieds made their 2025 debut at Magic Valley Speedway on Saturday, May 10, as the third-mile paved oval hosted the Outhouse Grand Prix presented by Idaho Central Credit Union. Alongside the Speed Tour Modifieds the Southern Idaho Mini Stocks, Western Mountain Inc. NASCAR Latemodels, McDonald’s Street Stocks, Magic Valley Speedway Midgets, and Project Filter Mini Modifieds went to battle for the night’s Affordable Appliance Repair trophies.
The Speed Tour Modifieds brought the thunder as they made their season debut Saturday. Matt Egley sprinted to the early lead while quick qualifiers Zach Webster and Donovan Barr sliced their way forward.
With just a handful of laps in the record books Webster hooked the inside line and powered to the top spot in his Advanced Maintenance, Kym Gunnell Trucking modified. Barr followed one lap later and immediately set to work tracking down Webster. An early caution aided Barr’s mission as the restart lined him up abreast of Webster.
The green flag waved and Webster erupted off the line to take the lead, but Barr battled back on the backstretch and dove to the inside of Webster in turn three. Contact was made, Barr scooted to the lead, and Webster lost the handle on his car and spun out in turn one to trigger another caution flag.
On the ensuing restart Barr blasted back to the lead but Webster was out for blood, and he screamed through the pack and into the runner up spot in just two frantic laps. Hard racing further back in the pack sent Willie Dalton’s modified spinning in turn four and once again set Barr and Webster on the front row for the restart.
When the green flag waved Webster left Barr in the dust, but Barr put his head down and piloted his machine to Webster’s rear bumper and began to apply heavy pressure to the leader. As the pair worked through lapped traffic Barr made his move and jumped to the low line in turn three. Contact was made, Webster spun down the track into Barr, and the two came to rest at the end of turn four. Barr would limp to the pit area on his own, but Webster was carried off via the Freedom Payments Gradall.
As soon as the track was clear Mother Nature unleashed an absolute downpour that drove fans into the souvenir shop, crews to the tech barn, and stopped all on track activity. Despite the Magic Valley Speedway crew’s best efforts to get the track back to a raceable condition the rain proved to be too much, and the race was called due to weather. The unofficial results list Darrell Dolling as the event winner, with Tony Phernetton second and Barr third.
Shawn Lester got the drop on Peyton Hardenbrook and Daniel Johnson to take the early lead in the Western Mountain Inc. NASCAR Latemodel feature. But Lester and his Jackson Spuds, BJ’s Bar and Tavern machine wasn’t safe up front as Johnson caught the leader and began to work high and low to find a way by. Lester defended the lead from the outside lane while Johnson committed his CMJ Real Estate car to the inside. It took six hard-fought laps, but Johnson eventually completed the pass and motored to the victory.
Matt Elliott, Chuck Groat, and Cheyenne Merrill went wheel-to-wheel-to-wheel to settle the Magic Valley Speedway Midget feature. Elliott dominated the race’s early stages but couldn’t fend off Groat’s Idaho Powder Coating, Grip Suspension machine as the man affectionately known as the ‘Flying Fossil’ collected the night’s Affordable Appliance Repair trophy.
Ed Griffith outlasted the Project Filter Mini Modified field to park his Mr. Mudd Concrete, Concrete Construction Supply racer in the Winner’s Circle at the Outhouse Grand Prix presented by Idaho Central Credit Union.
Alex Fitterman made the most of his youth and exuberance to clock the night’s fastest Outhouse Grand Prix lap in his Willow Real Estate Group, MDM Auto Transport machine. But thanks to some stellar backward driving and a seriously long piece of toilet paper Troy Palmer claimed the overall Outhouse Grand Prix win.
